1. Where was it most likely that the two girls would find work after school?

Ans. The two girls, Sophie and Jansie were already destined for a job in the biscuit factory and it was likely that they would work there after school.

2. What were the options that Sophie was dreaming of?Why does Jansie discourage her from having such dreams?



Ans.  Sophie was dreaming of opening up a boutique but  she would be fine working as a manger in a boutique too if she could not gather funds to open one. Her another dream was too become an actress and keep her boutique as a side business. She also dreamt of becoming a fashion designer if not an actress.
          Jansie unlike Sophie was sensible and down-to-earth. She knew that both of them were designated for the biscuit factory and having such  dreams was childish as the economic condition of their families were not good. They would not be able to realize their dreams. For this reason Jansie discouraged Sophie from having such dreams.

3. Why did Sophie wriggle when Geoff told her father that she had met Danny Cassey?


Ans. Danny Casey was  a young Irish footballer and Sophie's father would be angry if he knew that she met the Danny. Sophia was aware of that and so she didn't tell his father about her meeting. That's why when Geoff broke the news to her father about the meeting she wriggled where she was sitting at the table.


4. Does Geoff believe what Sophie says about her meeting with Danny Casey?


Ans. Geoff does not believe  what Sophie says about her meeting with Danny Casey. The reaction that Geoff gives when Sophie narrates her meeting with Danny confirms it. Geoff enquired her where she met Danny Casey and when she replied that she met him in the arcade, he told her that it can never be true. Geoff further enquired about Danny's looks when she told him that Danny stood beside her.


5. Does her father believe her story?

Ans. Sophie's father does not believe in her story and thinks it to be one of her wild stories which she made up.Further, he warns Sophie that her wild stories might one day land her into trouble.

6. How does Sophie include her brother Geoff in her fantrasy of her future?


Ans. Sophie envied her younger brother beacuse he had connection with the outer world. She believes that the world is expecting her arrival. Her fantasy  includes dreaming about going to the outside world with Geoff riding behind him.She would be in  a yellow dress and Geoff with his new, shining black letahers when the world greets them with a thunderous applause.



7. Which country did Danny Casey play for?

Ans. Danny Casey played football for Ireland.

8. Why didn't Sophie want Jansie to know about her story with Danny?


Ans.  Sophie did not want Jansie to know about her story with Danny beacuse Jansie would never keep it to herself. If something fell into her ears she might spread it to the whole neighbourhood. She was a type of girl who could not keep a secret.


9.Did Sophie really meet Danny Casey?
 Ans.  No, Sophie did not really meet Danny Casey. It was one of her fantasies.

10. Which was the only occassion when she got to see Danny Casey in person?


Ans. The only occassion when Sophie got to see Danny Casey in person was  on the football field during a match that she went to watch with her brother and father. Danny Casey was playing for the United and gave the second goal. United won the game.


Understanding the text

1. Sophie and Jansie were classmates and friends. What were the differrences between them that show up in the story?


Ans. Although Sophie and Jansie were classmates and friends, their approach towards life were quite different.  Sophie  lived in a world of fantasies and  dreams big. She wanted to  life of an actress, a fashion designer or become an owner of a boutique. The life she was living and her dreams were worlds apart from each other. 

  Unlike Sophie, Jansie was very down-to-earth in nature and practical. Since their financial condition were not good  Jansie used to advise Sophie not to dream big as their destiny  was to work in a biscuit factory right after school.Both the girls were opposite to each other in nature, one gets lost in her dreams and fantasies while the other lives in reality and reamains rooted.


2. How would you desribe the character and temperament of Sophie's father?


Ans. Sophie's father is an interesting character in the story. He  is described as a man having a plump face and eventually after  the day's work his face turns grimy and covered with sweat. He is alo portrayed as a football lover as every Saturday he with hi sons and daughter goes to watch football. If the team he supported emerges as winners the he celebrates by going to the pub. Moreover, the mannerism with which he tossed Derek's shoe on the sofa and sat down to watch telivision shows him as an agressive person having not no sense of sophistication.


3. Why did Sophie like her brother Geoff more than any other person? From her perspective, what did he symbolize?



Ans. Geoff has a very good nature. Sophie has a long list of dreams and fantasies which nobody but only Geoff would listen. Her classmate Jansie thinks she is foolish and always advises her to remain grounded. She does not like to share any secrets with her because she cannot keep it Her father never believes anything she says and dismisses  it as her wild stories. Her little brother Derek makes fun of her. Geoff is the only one with whom  she can confide her secrets. That is why Sophie liked her brother Geoff more than any other person.


4. What socio-economic background did Sophie belong to ? What are the indicators of her family's financial status?


Ans.  In the story "Going places" it is learnt that Sophie's family background is that of lower middle class. The financial status of the family is indicated in many ways. Firstly, the conversation between Sophie and Jansie  where Jansie remarks that they are destined to work in the biscuit factory after finishing school. Secondly , Sophie's house is not a decent one  and  her father is described as sweaty and grimy  after his days work including her mother's burning stove piling up dirt in the corner. Thirdly, Geoff who is out of school for three years was working as an apprentice mechanic. Fouthly, every Saturday they travel by bus to watch a football match. And finally, her father goes for celebration to a pub on a bicycle. All of these very lucidly indicates their middle class status.
